About This Project
A lightweight native system tray app built to control smart home devices without launching heavy mobile apps. The Rust backend communicates directly with the Tuya Cloud API, handling HMAC-SHA256 request signing, automatic OAuth token refresh cycles, and concurrent state management with Tokio. Supports boolean power toggles, 5-level fan speeds, and AC climate controls (16–30°C) with in-place tray state updates. Originally prototyped in Electron, then completely rewritten in Tauri v2 to slash binary weight from 100MB down to ~5MB. Features cross-platform support (Windows and Linux), auto-launch on startup, and GitHub release update checks.
Tech Stack
Key Features
- Real-time device control from system tray (lights, fans, AC units, outlets)
- HMAC-SHA256 signed Tuya Cloud API integration with automatic token rotation
- Non-disruptive 10-second auto-refresh with in-place menu state updates
- Cross-platform support (Windows MSI/NSIS, Linux AppImage/Deb/RPM)
- 95% smaller than Electron predecessor (~5MB vs ~100MB installer)
The Outcome
An open-source desktop utility on GitHub. The Tauri v2 rewrite cut installer size by 95% while delivering sub-millisecond IPC response and rock-solid Tokio concurrency.
